National Database of Australian Building Air Tightness Tests

The following is a summary of data from AIVAA’s initiative to gather blower door test results from Australian buildings so that they can be disseminated. We hope that this source of information will serve several purposes:

  • Improve the quality of reporting for clients, so that they know they are receiving excellent quality tests from AIVAA members.
  • Improve quality control for AIVAA members by striving to provide the best quality data.
  • Serve as a repository for blower door data from various sources to combine efforts and improve cost-effectiveness of studies of Australian building infiltration.
  • To provide benchmarks for buildings to compare themselves to others.
  • To provide data for regulators, researchers, and policy makers, to guide effective regulation.

Data Sources:

Some data has been published previously by various infiltration studies of Australian buildings. Other data has been recently donated to the database to be shared anonymously. Data source abbreviations in the table refer to the following:

ABT = Air Barrier Technologies
ALMA = Air Leakage Measurement Australia
ALMV = Air Leakage Measurement Victoria (now operated by Efficiency Matrix)
AP = Andrew Packard
CSIRO = Data from CSIRO report (various contractors)
EL = EnergyLeaks (now operated by Efficiency Matrix)
EM = Efficiency Matrix

 

Notes about data quality:

Where measurement uncertainty has been provided, it is reported in the database. Measurements of building leakage are an estimate only. The certainty of the estimate varies with many factors, but chiefly they are the number and range of data points and how well those data points correlate with each other. The better the correlation, and the more data used to make the calculation, the better the certainty.

For example, tests performed at 50 Pascals or greater are required by all major air tightness testing standards such as AS/NZS ISO 9972:2015. The reason is that tests performed at higher pressures often afford better certainty of measurement. Modern blower door software generates a measurement uncertainty figure automatically.

AIVAA members have committed to transparency of data and quality of testing and reporting, and will report specific data whenever possible.

What’s the difference between Air Changes (ACH) and Permeability (m3/hr•m2)?

Air changes per hour at 50 Pascals (ACH50) is a measure of building air tightness that relates to the building’s volume. Specifically, it is the number of times in one hour that the building’s enclosed volume is flushed out by a 50 Pascal pressure difference. 50 Pascals is just a level of pressure that many test standards use for reporting consistency.

Permeability, expressed in cubic meters per hour of air leakage per square meter of envelope area,  m3/hr•m2., is also commonly reported at 50 Pascals. This metric is based on the total combined area of the walls, ceilings, and floors of a building, and is commonly used for commercial buildings.

Different buildings can have widely different air change and permeability results because the size and shape of buildings varies a great deal. For example, a cube-shaped building such as a theater leaking 1000 m3/hr at 50 Pascals may have a high permeability rate and a low air change rate, while a wide, flat building such as a warehouse may have a low permeability rate and high air changes at the same leakage rate.

Commercial buildings often use permeability instead of air change rates, because sealing efforts relate more readily to envelope area than volume. Residential buildings use air change rates mostly because they are slightly easier to calculate.
